One way of measuring a camera's lifespan is in shutter cycles. To be more clear, it is the number of times the shutter opens and closes when you press the button to take a picture. Although it is just a rough estimate, checking this number could give you an idea on how much life is left in your camera. Free Shutter Count can help you with this information. If you connect it to a DSLR camera, it will immediately tell you its current shutter count, as well as other details.

The application is free to try with some minor restrictions. It is compatible with all popular Windows versions and it doesn't require any special tools or services. You won't spend more than a minute downloading the setup file and installing its components on your computer.

Free Shutter Count comes with a compact user interface, which presents only a few simple options. If you have a DSLR connected to your computer, with a USB cable, you can just click the Connect button and the application will start analyzing immediately. Once it gathers information from the camera's firmware, it will display its make and model on its interface, as well as its serial number, firmware version, owner and, of course, the camera's current shutter count.

The application works with Cannon, Nikon and Sony-made DSLR cameras. While most of them are supported, the software may have trouble with certain camera models, due to their older firmware. However, if you encounter such a problem, you can provide feedback to the developers, if you wish to help remedy this situation.

Another useful feature is the possibility of retrieving camera information from RAW images. Once you load a picture, through a standard browsing option, the application will immediately display the make and model of the used camera, as well as the other details, previously mentioned, except for the camera's shutter counter.

With Free Shutter Count's straightforward functionality, you can get a better idea on how much your DSLR camera has left to live.

Pros

The application can show you a DSLR camera's shutter count, as well as other details. The information is gathered instantly, directly from a camera's firmware. It is also possible to gather camera information from RAW images.

Cons

Some older camera models are not supported.
